Acts 20:7-20:38 - Running the Race Well - 2026 - Acts - To the Ends of the Earth - Part 2

Today we will focus on Acts 20:7-38. In verses 17-38 we get a farewell speech by Paul to the Elders of the church of Ephesus. But more than just a speech to the Elders of Ephesus, Paul’s speech really serves as a final word to every church on how they can stay faithful and fruitful as the seek to live out the Gospel. Paul says three things in his final sermon to the churches: 1) stick to the Gospel, 2) serve Jesus like me, 3) and cling to God and his word. Paul says if you will do these things you will receive the promised inheritance kept for us in Christ. In a world full of things that distract us from the what really is important, Paul’s simple instruction is refreshing.

Acts 19:21-20:6 - Worship the True God - 2026 - Acts - To the Ends of the Earth - Part 2

This week we will be nearing the end of Paul’s third missionary journey looking at Acts 19:21-20:6. This is an interesting section of scripture with lots of what we have come to see as Paul’s travel log. But, if we slow down I think this text once again shows us all the things the Spirit of God is doing to advance his church. What the Spirit is doing is meant to be an encouragement to us!

In fact, I think this passage is calling us individually and as a church walk confidently in the power of the Spirit as God grows us into faithful and fruitful Christians throughout our lives. God is teaching us through Paul’s example to walk confidently in the Spirit’s direction, to trust the Spirit in the midst of difficulty, and to be encouraged by other believers in the Spirit along the way.

Acts 17:1-34 - Easter - This Jesus is the Christ - 2026 - Acts - To the Ends of the Earth - Part 2

We continue in our Acts series looking at Acts 17. At the center of the passage is the message of the resurrection of Jesus. The Gospel message preached by Paul is best summarized in Acts 17:2 where it says “[Paul] reasoned…from the scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead.” We will see the reasonableness of the Gospel, how we can miss the Gospel as “religious” people, and the true saving Gospel offered in Christ. Christ’s life, death, and resurrection are all essential to save us and to prove the veracity of the Gospel and God’s approval of Jesus and us.

Acts 15:36-16:5 - Barnabas and Paul Separate - 2026 - Acts - To the Ends of the Earth - Part 2

This week we will consider one of the most honest passages in the Bible in Acts 15:36-16:5. The first part of our text will deal with the separation of Paul and Barnabas after a sharp disagreement. I am glad this text is in the Bible as it highlights how our sin can separate us, but also how God’s grace can redeem and bring us together. We all have broken interpersonal relationships in the church, in our families, and elsewhere. This text reminds us of that reality, but also of what God can do in the midst of his people to redeem and advance his purposes. Take a few moments to read these verses and consider the broken relationships in your life. What might it look like for God to redeem those relationships? Where is he asking you to trust him to begin to walk the road of redemption with him?

This week we are in Acts 15:1-35. In this passage the apostles worked to strive for unity amongst the believers who were from Jewish customs and new believers who were Gentiles. We will see how they had care and understanding for one another and that we receive grace through faith. I’m grateful for this passage as it reminds us we also need to strive for unity today and that we as Christians are to look different from the world, allowing Scripture to guide us.

As we gather for worship we will continue in our Acts series To the Ends of the Earth as we look at Acts 14:1-28. We will consider Paul and Barnabas’ bold witness for the Gospel as they plant churches across the Gentile world. Their example challenges us to be a bold witness in a world that needs Jesus. If you live in Salt Lake City, God has you here to be a witness for him. They will also challenge us to consider the vain things of this world that we may worship and exchange them for a relationship or deeper relationship with the living God. We are created to worship God and our hearts will not rest until we do.

Acts 12:25-13:52 - Paul and Barnabas First Missionary Journey - 2026 - Acts - To the Ends of the Earth - Part 2

This Sunday we will be back in Acts 12:25-13:52 thinking about Paul and Barnabas as they head out on their first missionary journey. The passage will draw a strong contrast between those that believe the Gospel and those that reject it, even make fun of it, and stand in the way of its advance. In our lives we will be on one side of Jesus or the other. We will either believe and follow him, or reject the Gospel and work against him. In Paul’s sermon he will also highlight the fact that the Gospel has come and offers us freedom from our sin and striving to make God happy with us. God has been working a plan throughout the OT and the NT culminating in Christ to save anyone who would put their faith in Christ. Paul’s invitation is to come and find freedom in the Gospel

Acts 11:1-30 - A Surprising Work of God - 2026 - Acts - To the Ends of the Earth - Part 2

Today we will be jumping into Acts 11 looking at the surprising work of God among the Gentiles and the surprising response by faithful believers to join God in what he is doing. Sometimes it is easy to miss what God is doing, or even be offended at his work. We want to know what God has said about what he is going to do in the world, be able to identify it, and be faithful to join him as he goes about his work to redeem the world in Christ. This passage will challenge us in some great ways to join God in what he is doing in SLC and the world.

A Future Hope for Today - 2026 - A Light in the Darkness

Throughout the history of Christianity, Christians placed their hope not in the temporalities of this life, but were constantly looking forward to the completion of their salvation when Jesus returns or they step into eternity. 1 Peter 1:3-9is a good guide in how to have a future hope that gives us life now. 1 Peter 1:3 says God has caused believers to be born again into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus from the Dead. This means this is an active hope, that is producing joy and expectation in us. Peter goes on to say that we have a great inheritance that God is keeping in heaven for us, and all of this causes us to rejoice now.

Unlike other things we may hope in, our hope in Christ is sure. His resurrection proves what God has said he is doing to save us. Because Jesus rose from the grave, we can have a sure hope that we will too. This means whatever life throws at us, for believers, everything is going to end really well.

Living in the Light of Community - 2026 - A Light in the Darkness

We will be talking about Living in the Light of Community - How God has placed us as followers of Christ in his body, the church, to help us grow and persevere in him.

The community of the church, the body of Christ does many things to help us live in the light of the Gospel. The church helps us identify and experience forgiveness and healing from sin. The church helps encourage us to persevere in the faith. Finally, the community of the church is there to be a support in times of sorrow, but also to rejoice with us when things go really well.

As we go into 2026 I want to challenge you to live in the light of community in church, the body of Christ. This means making Sunday morning a priority, but also finding a smaller group of people in the church that you can live in honest and open community with. The goal is growth in Christ and perseverance in faith, as we experience the Gospel applied to our hearts, all the way to the end.

A Cure for Anxiety - 2026 - A Light in the Darkness

This week we will continue in our series A Light in the Darkness applying the Gospel to the dark thoughts that swirl around in our hearts and minds. This week we will consider what the Bible has to say about anxiety. Anxiety is a growing problem in our world and particularly in younger generations. The good news is that the Gospel meets our anxiety with great hope and peace.

In Philippians 4:5-9 Paul gives us the Christian remedy to anxiety. He tells us three really important and practical things. First, God is at hand. In other words he is near and wants to help us in the things that we worry about. Second, he calls us to hand off our anxiety to God in prayer. We do that with earnest request and thanksgiving. Third, Paul instructs us to think on good and Godly things. This is really practical advice that can shed God’s light into the darkness of anxiety that can easily weigh us down. Finally, Paul tells us the result of walking out these really practical steps is that the peace of God will be with us and in us, and we will be guarded from further anxiety. That is great news.

[Unfortunately there was a power outage in the area of the church during the sermon before this sermon ended, but we got most of the sermon]

Your Life Has Meaning - 2026 - A Light in the Darkness

On the first Sunday of 2026 , we will start a short four week series – A Light in the Darkness. In John 1:4-5 the Apostle John illuminates our hope in Jesus when he says, “4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” It is easy in the winter season after the holidays to let our minds wander from the hope of the Gospel as the pressures of the world bear down on us once again. Over the next few weeks we want to apply the light of the Gospel to our hearts and minds in the areas of meaning, anxiety and worry, living in community, and having a hope for the future. As we start the new year we want the Gospel, once again, to transform our hearts and minds so that we can walk confidently with Jesus in these dark days.

Our is, what is the meaning of life? Why were you created? Everybody wants to find meaning in their life. When meaning fades or is lost, it is easy to sink in to depression or worse. We will look at Gen 1:26-28, Romans 12:1-2, and 1 Corinthians 10:31 as we think about what the Bible has to say about the meaning of life.

This Sunday we will continue in our third week of Advent looking at Love and the experience of Elizabeth at Advent in Luke 1:39-56. Part of the message of Christmas is that God loves you! So much so that Jesus stepped done from his thrown to come identify with us in our humanity as a baby. To be Immanuel – God with us. Elizabeth experienced God’s love and then extended it to Mary and those around her. In fact, we can see in her experience how much God loves us and how his love is meant to build our faith.

This week we will begin our Experiencing Advent Series celebrating the birth of Christ this season. Over the next four Sundays and Christmas Eve Service we will consider the experiences of Mary, Zechariah, Elizabeth, Joseph, and Simeon and what they have to teach us about the coming of Christ into our world and the Hope, Joy, Love, Peace, and Light of Salvation Jesus made possible for those that follow him. We will also hear from 4 different preachers over the Advent Series to enjoy. This week Mike Kirby will be preaching on Hope from the Advent experience of Mary in Luke 1:26-38.

Hope Found in a Surprising Conversion - 2025 - Acts - To the Ends of the Earth Part 1

As we finish our Part I of our Acts series looking at Saul’s surprising conversion in Acts 9:1-31. Luke records for us this amazing conversion that leads to a surprising commission and a surprising message. When we look at how Saul was saved, we should be encouraged that God can save anyone at anytime. Maybe you have given up hope for the salvation of a friend or relative, or it just seems like it is unlikely, God wants to show is it is never too late and no one is ever too far gone to find Jesus.

We will continue in our study of Acts 8:4-40 looking at Philip and his ministry to the Samaritans and the Ethiopian Eunuch. The great thing about Philip is that even in times of distress and persecution, he was faithful to spread the Gospel. His life challenges us to think deeply about how we react to life’s interruptions – do we get angry and frustrated, or do we trust that God is doing something bigger and look for ways to be faithful.

We continue in our study of Acts and look at the life of Stephen in Acts 6:8-8:3. Stephen, a great man of character, will be interrogated by the Sanhedrin for his belief in Jesus and will give a great sermon in defense of the Gospel. In the sermon, Stephen challenges us to think bigger about God and to not exchange God for an idol that we want to serve us. As we go through Stephen’s words, we will see the anatomy of much of our unbelief and resistance to the Holy Spirit’s witness in our lives. The answer is to yield to the Spirit and meet God in the face of Christ. I am looking forward to opening the scriptures with you and hearing what God has for us.

This week we will jump back into Acts and look at Acts 4:32-5:16. In this passage Luke shows us how the Spirit is unifying his church, sanctifying his church, and growing his church. The passage is a good reminder again that what God is doing to save the world through the proclamation of the Gospel in the church is his work, and we want to join him in what he is doing. The Spirit brings about unity for the purpose of the advancement of the Gospel. In these days God has given us unity at Risen Life which makes me think he wants to do some great things through us to reach this valley.

Proclaiming the Gospel with Boldness - 2025 - Acts - To the Ends of the Earth Part 1

As we take a look at Acts 4:23-31, I think God has sovereignly met us with timely instruction from his word. There has been lots of talk about Christian boldness these days, but maybe you are unsure what that should look like. In this passage Peter and John will give us a great example. After the healing of the lame man and the ensuing events, they return to gather with the rest of the church to pray for continued boldness to speak the word of God. In this passage we see the disciples find strength in the community of believers, stand on the sure foundation of God’s sovereignty and what he is doing in the world through Jesus, and ask for strength and opportunity from God to bold for the Gospel–and God answers their prayer. As we think about our own day, let’s deeply consider their example given to us for our instruction.

As we dive into the word, we will be continuing our study of Acts looking at Acts 4:1-22. In this passage the growing church will face its first round of persecution as Peter and John are brought before the Jewish council and interrogated about the healing of the lame man at the Temple. This story is really interesting, because it is without a doubt that a great miracle has happened, but the Jewish religious leaders miss what God is doing because they are annoyed with “who” did the miracle. In essence they miss out on the goodness of God because they are too focused on their own position and how they think things “should” be done. How often have we done the same? The truth of the matter is that these common men have been transformed as they hung out with Jesus. In fact, Peter and John will make it very clear that it is only through the name of Jesus that this healing has taken place. The healing points to the fact that there is only one name in which we can be saved and that is Jesus. Let’s not miss Jesus because he doesn’t look like we think he should.

I love what Peter says in Acts 3:19-20 in the midst of his sermon. He encourages the crowd to repent of their sins, and turn to God so that their sins may be wiped away, and then he says that we should eagerly do this so that times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord. What a great promise as we come to Jesus for help in our sins. Maybe your sin has gotten the best of you this week. Peter’s words invite us not to run from Jesus when we sin, but rather to run to Jesus and be forgiven as we repent and so we can then enjoy the presence of the Lord. He wants us to be with him and has made a way in Jesus.

Salvation in the Name Of - Jesus - 2025 - Acts - To the Ends of the Earth Part 1

In this passage Peter and John miraculously heal a man who was lame in his legs his entire life. This event will be important for the next couple of weeks in Acts as we see Peter’s sermon that follows, the people’s response, and the response of the religious leaders. Peter will show us this week that the miracle was done in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Peter did not heal this man with his own powers, but it came about by the name of Jesus. Peter points out to us that it is by faith in the name of Jesus that people are healed and saved. In fact, all the physical miracles in the Bible want to point us toward God’s ability to heal us spiritually. Salvation is only available through faith in the name of Jesus. <itunes:summary>In this passage Peter and John miraculously heal a man who was lame in his legs his entire life. It is one thing to know about Jesus, and another to put your faith in his name to save you. I am excited to walk through this passage tomorrow and consider Salvation in the Name Of – Jesus.</itunes:summary>

In this passage we have a glimpse of the early church’s life together as they sought to worship God and advance the Gospel. With the coming of the Holy Spirit the common activities of the new church led to Uncommon Results. People were saved, there was love for one another that overflowed in generosity, and God was worshipped. These results came about as body of Christ focused on gathering together around the teaching of the apostles, fellowship, communion, and prayer. The formula is not any different today. If we will be faithful to do what God has called us to do as spirit-empowered believers, he will do great things in us and in our world.

As we gather for worship we will continue our study in Acts and look at Peter’s Pentecost Sermon in Acts 2:14-41. This is one of the better sermon’s in the Bible that has lots to teach us. Peter responds to the crowds that accused him and the apostles of being drunk for speaking in other languages, empowered by the Spirit, with his sermon. He wants the crowds to see that the coming of the Spirit is a miracle of God and the fulfilment of what he promised hundreds of years ago by the Prophets. In response to what God has done through Christ, the people should repent and be baptized as followers of Jesus and enter the kingdom of God that has broken into the world. In like fashion, we will work through the gospel as Peter presents it and then celebrate three baptisms together as a church!

What Do We Do Now? - 2025 - Acts - To the Ends of the Earth Part 1

This is an interesting passage that tells us what the apostles and other believers did after Jesus ascended to heaven, but the Holy Spirit had not yet come. Furthermore, they were sorting through the feelings of hurt that they likely felt because of Judas’ betrayal. The gathered believers might have asked the question, ‘What do we do now?’ Whether you find yourself on a mountain top with God or in a valley with you your faith, tomorrow’s passage answers our question as we see what the gathering of believers did to sort out their situation and wait on God’s promise of the Holy Spirit. The believers gathered together, sought the Lord in prayer and in his word, they trusted God’s sovereign plan, and they continued to focus on the mission of spreading the Gospel around the world. In essence, they persevered in faith. If you are asking yourself the question, ‘What do I do now?”, because of hurt you have experienced in church or in life, or just because you have come to the end of a season of life, let’s learn from the example of the believers in Acts 1:12-26.

Humility that Leads to Exaltation - 2025 - Firm in the Faith: 1 Peter

In a world that is caught up in appearances, strength, power, and beauty, Peter urges something to us that is counterintuitive. He bases this way of living on Christ himself. The king of the universe who humbled himself in obedience to the Father as he came to serve us in humility. And the result? Jesus was exalted to heaven and the right hand of God. And now Peter tells us if you want share in Christ’s exaltation, then humble yourself to God’s will for your life. He then proceeds to talk about humble church leadership, humble Christian living, and finally exhorts us to stand Firm in the Faith.

Entrust Your Soul To God - 2025 - Firm in the Faith: 1 Peter

You know our lives are pretty good here in Salt Lake City, but this week Peter is going to remind us that sometimes “fiery trials” come on us as believers from out of nowhere. Peter doesn’t want us to think these trials strange, but rather be prepared to face them with faith and trust in God. This week we will continue in our 1 Peter series, Firm in the Faith, looking at 1 Peter 4:12-19 which provides a pathway forward in the midst of the suffering we will face. Peter will tell us to rejoice, do good, and entrust our souls to God – knowing that the suffering is in God’s hands, it will refine us, God will be with us, and ultimately there will be life and joy to be had as a follower of Jesus. No matter what you may be facing, God wants to walk with you and see you through it. Let’s entrust ourselves to him.

An Unlikely Decision, An Unlikely Result - 2025 - Firm in the Faith: 1 Peter

Peter in these verses is calling us to take on the mind of Christ as we live as believers in the world. We are to set our minds to live for God knowing that will involve suffering. As we set our minds to live for Jesus, which will include suffering, he tells us that decision will lead to victory over sin. When we live for something greater in the Gospel sin loses its power. Peter in the rest of these verses will then contrast how the world lives with the way God has called us to live in the Spirit. God has invited us to a great hope of salvation and a great adventure living for his kingdom that will bear fruit in our lives now and eternal life in the future.

This week we will continue in our 1 Peter series, Firm in the Faith, looking at 1 Peter 2:11-25. Now this is an interesting passage to consider on a weekend where we celebrate our freedom. Peter is going to call us in our new found freedom in Christ to submit ourselves to Jesus and every human institution, because all authority in this world comes from God. Furthermore he will call us to be ok with suffering injustice, knowing that when we suffer for doing good, we are actually identifying with Jesus and the very core of the Gospel. When you suffer for doing good, you are walking in the very footsteps of Jesus as he went to the cross and suffered and died for our sins, though he himself was sinless. And yet it was Christ suffering of injustice that led to our salvation in God’s plan. In a similar fashion, God is bearing witness to the Gospel through us when we as followers of Jesus suffer injustice for doing good. Peter’s message to us again is that we can only suffer well and persevere when we have set our hope on the grace that is to be revealed at the return of Christ. If we are firm in what God has done and is doing through Christ to save us, we can persevere through any suffering with hope.

God's New Living Building - 2025 - Firm in the Faith: 1 Peter

This Sunday we will dive back into 1 Peter and think about what it means to be Firm in the Faith again. Together, we will look at 1 Peter 2:4-12. Here Peter gives us important imagery for God’s people, the church. He shows us how we are all being built into a spiritual house for God. No physical temple needed anymore. God’s people will be God’s new temple, and Jesus is the cornerstone. Jesus as the cornerstone will be good for those that believe, but for others he will be a rock of offence and great stumbling block. You can probably think of many people in your life right now that are stumbling over Jesus. For God’s people however, Jesus will be the sure foundation we need to get through life with a living hope.

In light of everything that Peter has said about our salvation in the first twelve verses of chapter 1, he will call us to set our hope fully on the grace that is to come when Jesus returns. Peter wants us in to live like we believe the Gospel. He will give us several very practical imperatives for how we are to live in light of the Gospel if we have set our hope on Jesus.

The Mindset of an Elect Exile - 2025 - Firm in the Faith: 1 Peter

This Sunday we will be starting a new series in 1 Peter which we are calling Firm in the Faith. Peter is writing to Christians spread across the world to encourage them to continue to hope in God and the salvation he has accomplished in Christ. Life in our world is difficult, and we see and experience tremendous amounts of suffering daily, but this should not lead us to despair or abandon our faith. Peter wants us to remember what God is doing even in the midst of everything - that God will be faithful to save us. Peter also makes God really big in his letter. The bigger we see God in our world and in our lives the surer our hope becomes. If we are going to face everything that life throws at us we need to hope in the Gospel and what God is doing.

This week we will begin our study of 1 Peter looking at 1 Peter 1:1-12. Here Peter wants to remind us who we are as Christians and of our relationship to the world. We are ‘elect exiles’ as he calls us. People chosen by God for a salvation that will be accomplished, and yet we live life as foreigners on this earth as we wait for Jesus. We will be tested through suffering, but that suffering is used of God to refine us. This is what God has planned, and he will be faithful.

Encouraging One Another - 2025 - The Church

This will be the last sermon in our series on The Church. Jeremiah Johnston will be preaching from Hebrews 10:23-25. In these verses the author of Hebrews encourages us as the church to not neglect meeting together, but to meet regularly as the body of Christ to encourage one another as we wait for Christ’s return. In addition, the author of Hebrews encourages us as the church to consider how we can continue to stir one another up to love and good deeds as we hold fast the confession of our faith without wavering, because God will be faithful to complete our salvation in Christ.

Known for Love - 2025 - The Church

Today we will continue our church series as we look at John 13:34-35 – The Church: Known For Love. These two verses are Jesus’ new command to the disciples–that his new society of believers, the church, will be known for the love that it has between its members. Furthermore, it will be this love that will be a witness to the world. This love will be defined by the love Jesus showed his disciples, and the love he has shown to the world on the cross. These are truly challenging verses for us to wrestle with as a church. This kind of love can only come through a mind and heart that has been transformed by the Gospel and empowered by the Spirit.

A Body on the Move - 2025 - The Church

This Sunday as we think more about the church we will consider how God has uniquely called and gifted believers, that make up the body of Christ, to serve in the church. As we use our gifts the church grows in maturity and advances the kingdom of God. It is imperative that each one of us find our place in the church to use our giftings. Some giftings are very practical and others are more miraculous, but the Bible teaches us that each gift is equally important for the body of Christ to function properly as God designed. This begs the question, “How has God gifted you to serve in the church? Are you serving?” If you haven’t found your place yet, “We need you!” We will consider service as part of the Christian’s life from 1 Corinthians 12:4-1, 27-31 & Romans 12:3-8. Take a moment to read these passages. Kelsey Conroy and others will share with us some new things we are doing to better help you find a place to serve at Risen Life.

For Growth in Christ - 2025 - The Church

This Sunday we will be diving deeper into our look at the Church and talk about one of the primary purposes it serves in the life of believers. God places us as believers in the church so that we can grow up into maturity in Christ. Ephesians 4:10-16 tells us how God has designed the church to be an incubator for Christian growth. God has given the good gift of leadership to the church to help train the church to do ministry together. Under the authority of Christ the church leadership and members work to help one another grow in Christ. We also see in this passage that the members grow in their understanding of doctrine, how they are gifted to serve, and in love for God and man. Take a few minutes today to read through these verses and think about how the church has been a place for you to grow in Christ. Being a part of a local church is an indispensable part of God’s plan to continue to transform your life and heart into the image of Christ.

This Sunday we will be continuing in our Church Series looking at - The Church: A New Society. What Jesus is doing in the church is recreating a new society of people that are in relationship with God the Father. They come out of the world and begin to grown into a gathering where God’s Spirit dwells. The Bible gives us several metaphors for the new society of the Church. It calls it a household, a living temple, and a body. Each one of these metaphors are meant to speak to the nature of the church being made up of individuals, and yet together making an important whole. Every member of the church is important in God’s eyes, and it would be a strange situation to be a Christian and not be connected to the body of Christ - the Church. As we consider this new society, we hope that the Spirit will show us all the beauty of what the gathering of the saints in the New Society of the Church.

A Pillar and Declaration of Truth - 2025 - The Church

This Sunday we will begin a new series on the Church. The Church is God’s best plan to declare the truth of the Gospel to the whole world so that salvation can be found in Christ. It is easy today to misunderstand the purpose of the Church, its mission, and our place it in, but it has been and is essential to God’s plan to advance his kingdom on Earth. Over the next six weeks we will look at and clarify what the Bible has to say about the church and how we as believers in Jesus are called to participate in it.

This week we will look at what the church is and is called to do at its core in 1 Timothy 3:14-16 and Ephesians 3:7-12. In these passages Paul tells us that the church is meant to be the pillar of truth in the world and it mission is to declare the truth of the Gospel to the world. These affirmations of what the church is at its core will challenge us to believe if the church’s message is ultimate truth for all people. It will also challenge us as those that claim to members of the church to declare the Gospel to those God has put in our lives. Here is the Bottom Line: We as the church are called to stand for and declare the truth of the Gospel to the World.

Here is the Bottom Line: We as the church are called to stand for and declare the truth of the Gospel to the World.</itunes:summary>

Mary Magdalene - 2025 - Experiencing the Cross

This Sunday we will continue in our sermon series “Experiencing the Cross” and consider Mary Magdalene’s experience of the resurrection in John 20:1-18. Mary experiences the sorrow, confusion, and pain of losing the one that healed her of seven demons, the one she walked with for years, and her mentor and teacher that had given her hope. Her sorrow and confusion will be replaced with great Joy as Jesus appears and reveals himself to her first. Jesus wants us to remember the events of the resurrection, hear him call us by name, and believe. Our response to the resurrection should be to put our faith in him, that he is who he said he is, the Son of God our Savior, proven by the resurrection. He is Risen!

The Centurion - 2025 - Experiencing the Cross

This week we will consider the Roman Centurion and his Experience of the Cross this week out of Matthew 27:45-54. This unnamed Centurion likely witnessed much of Jesus’ sham trial, may have participated in mocking him, and seems to be entrusted with overseeing Christ’s crucifixion all the way to the end. But another surprising event occurs. This Roman soldier, after witnessing the events of the day, watching the way Jesus died, and the miraculous events like an earthquake that coincided with Christ’s death, is struck with awe and makes an important confession about Jesus. He says, “Truly this was the Son of God!” The guy that wasn’t supposed to get it right, the guy that shouldn’t buy into this Jesus thing does! In fact, his confession along with similar confessions from the disciples are meant to be a model for us. Matthew wants his readers to look at Jesus and the things surrounding his life and confess that Jesus is the Son of God. Now there is a lot packed into a confession of Jesus as the Son of God, not the least of which is a claim that Jesus is divine, that we will explore tomorrow. But for now the text confronts us and asks this Holy Week, Do you believe Jesus is truly the Son of God? This is a necessary part of our confession to be saved by Christ.

Pilate - 2025 - Experiencing the Cross

Pilate is an interesting character in the Gospels. Pilate gets a couple first hand interviews with Jesus, but unfortunately is too concerned with his own life, career, and managing the “Jesus Situation” to truly see the king of the universe standing before him. Jesus reveals himself to Pilate in so many ways, and yet Pilate misses Jesus.

Pilate is a great example for us as we live our modern lives. We can get very caught up with the things of life that clamor for our time and attention and tend to squeeze any thoughts of Jesus out of our mind. Furthermore, it is often hard to get around the worldview we have grown up with to understand and believe the out-of-this-world truth that Jesus proclaims. Often we find ourselves dismissing the claims of the Gospel, its hope and promise of real life, to make ends meet, manage a crisis in our lives, or just get through the day. As we clamor Jesus stands in front of us with a ready invitation and open arms to embrace us and give us peace. Will we stop to consider his revelation of truth?

Revelation - The Judgment of Babylon and the Beast - 2025 - Persevere in Faith - The Book of Revelation - The Things That Must Soon Take Place

This week we will continue our study in Revelation looking at Revelation 17-19:5. This really is a zoom in on the seventh bowl and God’s wrath on those that oppose him in the world. The world in these chapters is likened to the ancient city Babylon. Babylon is then pictured as a beautiful and rich prostitute that, empowered by Satan, has deceived the whole world with her wares. God is coming in judgment against the world and Satan and will defeat them both. The world will mourn and the saints will rejoice.

God’s call to us in the midst of these images comes in Revelation 18:4 “Come out of her, my people…” In other words, don’t get caught up in the world’s deception and find yourself estranged from God and in sin. Rather, come out the world and live a separate and distinct life to God that is holy, living in the grace of God, and being a witness in the world.

This is a timely message for us as God’s children trying to persevere in the world by faith. The world’s deception through riches, sex, and power is powerful and persuasive and can lead us far from God. We as God’s people must learn to distinguish what is of God and what is not, and not live like the world. I think this passage will challenge each one of us to evaluate our lives and see if we are living for the things of the world or God. As God reveals our hearts, he extends us the grace of his forgiveness and the power of his spirit to come out of Babylon and live a life holy to him. What are the ways you are living like the world? What is God asking you to set down and begin living for him in a new way today?

Come and join the gathering of the body of Christ this week as we celebrate all that he has done to save us. Let’s be a people that are learning to come out of Babylon on our journey to the new heavenly city of God.

Revelation - The Seven Bowls - 2025 - Persevere in Faith - The Book of Revelation - The Things That Must Soon Take Place

As the nation readies itself for the yearly battle between two of the best NFL teams tomorrow, we will be preparing ourselves for the final battle that will occur between God and the world. Revelation 15-16 gives us a glimpse of the final battle that Satan and the world are preparing to wage against God. No need to worry for believers, God will win and already has. God will put down this final rebellion once and for all. God will be true to his character and bring about justice and righteousness in the world. These chapters in Revelation recount the seven bowls of God’s wrath that God’s angels will pour out on the world to accomplish this last fight. Jesus warns us this last battle could come at any time. He also encourages us to be ready for the fight. How do we do that? Jesus says, stay awake and keep yourself clothed in the righteous clothes he provides. In other words we need to be ready and aware of what the evil world is doing around us and not be deceived by their tricks. We are to persevere in faith, continue to do the things of Christians, and keep trusting God. Once God wins the battle we will worship him forever.

Revelation - The Great Harvest - 2025 - Persevere in Faith - The Book of Revelation - The Things That Must Soon Take Place

This Sunday we will dive into Revelation 14 which shows us what will be the end of believers and unbelievers when Jesus returns. This is the first passage in Revelation that shows us Jesus returning to the earth and what will happen as He does so. Believers will be kept secure in the new city of God singing praises to the Father and the Son about their work of salvation in their lives. Unbelievers will face the wrath of God as Jesus comes to judge the earth, and for those that don’t repent, eternal destruction in Hell.

Jesus coming is pictured as a harvest. He is coming to harvest both believers and unbelievers and gather His people into His house, and cast out unbelievers to the fire. This is both an encouraging passage for those that know Jesus, but also a sobering passage as we think about all those that don’t know Jesus. How should we respond to a passage like this? One, give our lives to Christ. Two, keep persevering in faith all the way to the end. Three, join God’s mission to save people out of the world. How is God calling you to respond to this passage?

Revelation - The Seven Trumpets - 2025 - Persevere in Faith - The Book of Revelation - The Things That Must Soon Take Place

This week we will keep plunging deeper into our study of Revelation looking at the seven trumpets in Revelation 8:6-11:19. This is a large chunk of scripture, in fact the largest we will cover in this series at one time, that deals with the theme of the sounding of the seven trumpets of judgment. These chapters in Revelation encourage us to persevere as faithful witnesses to the Gospel in these latter days as God redeems this world and brings his kingdom from heaven to earth. These will not be easy days for the church, and terrible days for unbelievers, but God and the Lamb will prevail. His kingdom will be established and for those that persevere with him in faith all the way to the end, we will dwell in the presence of the Lord forever, have all wrongs made right, and get to enjoy the New Heavens and Earth with Him.

Today we will continue our Revelation series looking at Revelation 6-8:5 and the opening of the seven seals. This is where things get spicy!

As we go through the second part of our Revelation series, the goal is not to understand every detail, but rather the big things God wants to say to us about what is to come and how we can persevere as believers in faith through it all. In these chapters we wrestle with the question, ‘Who can stand in the midst of the judgments God is bringing on the earth?’ The answer is those that have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb and sealed by God for salvation.

Revelation - Worship the Lamb - 2025 - Persevere in Faith - The Book of Revelation - The Things That Must Soon Take Place

Revelation is a book about the perseverance of God’s people by faith in the last days. Jesus gave us seven letters to his church in chapters 1-3 and now he will begin to reveal what must soon take place in the world in the rest of the book as his kingdom comes.

We will begin the second part of our study with Revelation 4-5. These are two of the greatest chapters in the Bible that pull the veil back on the throne room of heaven and show us the worship of the Godhead that is eternally ongoing. These chapters also teach us to worship God the Father for his sovereignty and creation, as well as to worship the Lamb for his sacrifice on the cross. Together, God the Father, through the work of the Son, empowered by the Spirit has brought about our redemption and is ushering in God’s Kingdom in the entire cosmos. The message of these chapters is that God the Father and Christ the Lamb are worthy of all our worship!

Whispers of His Coming - Love - 2024 - Whispers of His Coming

Love is an attribute of God himself. As the Bible claims, God is love. If you enjoy being loved in any capacity, that love is meant only to be a shadow of the true source of love, God himself. The birth, life, death and resurrection of Christ are meant to be a love letter from God to all of humanity. God showed his love for us in that he did not leave us in this broken world and our sin, but rather came to rescue us and lay down his life for us. The Bible points to these actions of God in Christ as the very definition of what it means to love.

In the Christmas season, God’s invitation to us in Jesus is to come and be loved. Experience the unconditional, never wavering, all-encompassing, grace infused love of God in Jesus. God loves us because of nothing in ourselves, but rather because he chose us in Jesus. It is this great love of God for us that we celebrate as we gather as the church.

We continue our Advent preaching series looking at Joy from Isaiah 9:1-7. What we see in Isaiah is the experience of joy is like coming out of gloom to the glory of God, it is a walking out of darkness into the light, moving from anguish to joy! Joy is a settled and sure happiness arising from God’s presence in our lives and a surety in the good works he is doing in our lives and in the world. Furthermore, God takes joy in the task of saving us! Part of the wonder of Christ’s birth is that it brings the possibility of real joy into our lives and our world. Let's celebrate with joy what God is doing through Jesus!

Whispers of His Coming - Peace - 2024 - Whispers of His Coming

This week we are continuing our Advent Series, Whispers of His Coming, looking at Peace in Zechariah 9:9-10. The days when Zechariah prophesied were interesting times for Israel. They were back in the land after the exile, had a rebuilt temple, but still faced the oppression of a foreign nation and no real King to speak of. No doubt there was a lack of peace for the nation. However, Zechariah prophesied of a coming day when a Divine King would bring peace to the nation of Israel and all the nations of the world. Mathew 21:1-11 cites Zechariah to tell us that Jesus is the Divine King Israel has hoped for.

Peace in our day, both in the world and in our own hearts, can be very elusive. Even the Christmas season with all its busy hustle and bustle can steal our peace. As we celebrate and remember the birth of Christ, let’s focus once again on Christ’s birth that is meant to reveal the peace that is available to us in the Gospel.

This Sunday we will be pushing pause on our series in Revelation and focus on the arrival of Jesus with a new series “Whispers of His Coming”. We will spend the next four weeks focusing on Old Testament prophecies of Jesus and their fulfillment in the New Testament in the life and work of Jesus. As we celebrate and prepare for Jesus’ arrival, let’s do all we can this Christmas season to keep our eyes on Him!

Revelation Ch 3c - The Letter to the Church in Laodicea - 2024 - Persevere in Faith - The Book of Revelation

Join us as Pastor Jared continues our series in Revelation. We will complete the first section of the book of Revelation as we look at the seventh and final letter from Jesus to the Church in Laodicea in Revelation 3:14-22. This is a great letter to consider as we move into the Holiday season because in it Jesus is really asking us the question, “What do you value most in life?” We will see in this letter how our prosperity can lead us to a lukewarm faith that blinds us to our true spiritual need of Jesus. The remedy is to experience God’s love toward us in Christ, Repent of our apathy, and learn to be Zealous for Jesus.

Revelation Ch 3b - The Letter to the Church in Philadelphia - 2024 - Persevere in Faith - The Book of Revelation

Join us as Pastor Jared continues our series in Revelation as we look at the letter to the church in Philadelphia.

Jesus commends this church that they have been faithful to keep his word and have not denied his name even though they are weak. Jesus then tells them that he is about to do something in their midst they would never believe. Jesus shows himself to be the one that controls who enters the kingdom and how the kingdom advances. In Philadelphia, Jesus is going to do a miraculous work to save the churches enemies. They will come and bow at the feet of the Christians in that church and join them in worship as they learn about the Gospel message and Christ’s love for the church.

This is a great letter that encourages us to persevere in faith even when we feel powerless. Our faithfulness in following Jesus makes us available for him to move through us to advance his kingdom in areas and with people we never thought possible. This letter encourages us to keep asking God to open a door for great ministry through RLC in this valley.
