Our plans got rearranged due to Miroslav’s son’s illness. We had the morning open to explore the old city. It was still drizzly, but even with the dampness, this place holds a special charm. The people are friendly and the view of the sea is captivating.
We explored the Roman forum which is now a grid of foundations and a few stumps of columns. Even from this, one can imagine what ancient life might have been like in Roman Zadar. The bell tower of Saint Anastasia’s Cathedral, the tallest in Zadar, was closed because it is not yet tourist season. Scott had hoped to climb it to get a bird’s eye view of the city. The St Donatus Cathedral next door was turned into a music venue.
Notable citizens of Zadar included George von Trapp depicted in Sound of Music movie, and Krešimir Ćosić, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame and brought the LDS faith to Croatia.
In the evening, we went to Baptistička Crkva (Baptist Church) and presented our science and the Bible talk to a small, eager, group of about twelve. Pastor Miroslav graciously translated into Croatian. We objectively presented argument for and against the Big Bang and Evolution Theories. Science is about making observations and hypotheses, excluding the unlikely proposals. The likeliest conclusion, in our eyes, is that God is Creator and in charge of His creation. People stuck around for discussions afterwards. There were questions on the meaning of “day”, carbon dating and neurolink.
We pray that God will use this church to spread His word in Zadar, and especially for their church plants.
